Decision guides

What makes a salary benchmark useful in South Africa?

A practical guide to role matching, pay components, source quality and the questions to ask before relying on a salary comparison.

01

Start with the decision

An offer, annual review, retention proposal and pay-structure review are different decisions. Define the population, the decision date and the evidence needed before choosing a dataset.

02

Match the work, then the title

Record responsibilities, decision authority, reporting line, team size, location and operating context. A job title is a starting point; it does not establish equivalent work.

03

Compare like-for-like reward

Separate guaranteed pay from variable incentives, overtime, allowances and benefits. State whether amounts are monthly or annual and whether they represent basic salary, total guaranteed pay or a broader cost-to-company definition.

04

Keep a source record

Record the provider, licence or permitted use, effective date, geography, sector, role match and available sample information. Flag ageing or small samples. If a source cannot support the comparison, say so.

05

Turn the comparison into options

Show the current package, reference point, proposed package, recurring cost and alternatives. A compa-ratio is package divided by a defined midpoint; it is not a market percentile or a conclusion about fairness.

06

Document judgement

Explain why the selected option is appropriate, who reviewed it, what limitations remain and what must happen before implementation. Keep the source and proposal version with the decision.
